Highland’s ESG Practice

At Highland, environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) principles are incorporated throughout the many facets of our organization from the relationships we have with our communities, our employees and our environment to the trust and transparency we have with our investors. We pride ourselves on delivering transparent, long-term results for our investors and we believe this is best accomplished by tailoring to our investors’ needs. Highland considers ESG factors in a manner consistent with our investment philosophy centered on being investors first. We believe in maintaining a long-term, value-oriented view toward investing, as evidenced by our bottom-up research process and top-down portfolio management, sector rotation and technical analysis. We seek to generate alpha by identifying risks, seeking to mitigate volatility and quickly identifying and selling investments when our investment thesis has changed. We incorporate a rigorous, transparent and fully-customizable investment analysis of all of our portfolios. Risk management, including ESG risk management within our portfolios, is integrated into each level of the investment process from due diligence to asset allocation to ongoing monitoring. We consider ESG issues alongside traditional financial analysis to provide a more comprehensive view of each investment. Additionally, we incorporate ESG screening for investors who have mandated ESG restrictions in their portfolios.

Community

At Highland, we’re proudly invested in the communities where our employees live and work, and are committed to making a difference through volunteerism, advisory board involvement, and financial donations to both local community organizations and national nonprofit organizations. At Highland, we believe our community is vitally important and that it’s imperative for us all to contribute our time and resources to the initiatives whose mission’s focus on directly improving the lives of those in need. We have a particular interest in focusing our efforts on programs concentrated on education, healthcare and veteran’s initiatives. Highland and its employees focus on being actively involved in national philanthropic activities as well as the local community. Highland will match employee contributions to qualified organizations up to a maximum of $300 per employee per calendar year. Since 2005 Highland and its partners have committed more than $10 million to organizations around the world.

Environment

Highland recently moved to a new, more environmentally friendly office space and invested in the necessary renovations to cut its carbon footprint dramatically. For example, Highland uses sustainable hardwood floors, produced domestically from second growth forests, ensuring that none of the wood came from rain forests or other environmentally sensitive areas. Additionally, Highland installed low-water-usage toilets and sinks in all restrooms in order to reduce the use of fresh water. Highland also outfitted the entire office with LED, high performing fluorescent lighting which reduces our electrical load of lighting by more than one-third. Highland believes in the importance of an open office environment that facilitates transparency and collaboration and encourages interaction between teams. For these reasons, Highland created an open office environment with ample access to natural light, which not only cuts down on energy usage, but has also been shown to enhance the quality of life of our employees.

Employees

Highland’s approach to employee compensation, benefits and support is designed with the intent of establishing a long-term relationship with our employees and allowing them to focus on the long-term interests of our clients. Highland was recently named by Pensions and Investments as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Money Management for 2014. Highland offers employees best-in-class benefits package including premium and deductible-free healthcare insurance, on-site Doctor’s appointments, a fully stocked kitchen, catered meals and on-site dry cleaning. We attempt to provide as much support as possible in areas that might otherwise require employee’s attention to allow them to focus on serving our client’s interests. Performance bonuses are typically paid out in installments over time so the highest compensated investment professionals are typically the employees who have provided the best long-term results to our investors.

Investments

Highland seeks to apply rigorous quantitative and qualitative investment analysis to the companies and positions it invests in. This includes serious consideration of the character of management and corporate governance structure and policies of the company. A poorly designed or implemented corporate governance structure can override an otherwise attractive investment opportunity.
